Hostel de La Viuda in Punta del Diablo: Who moved my queso?!

You know the situation when someone offers you that ice cream flavor you don’t like, cause maybe there’s a good reason for you to try it again and, at all times you prove yourself you don’t like it? We’ve got to live with that, as this sort of situation will happen for sure in the future but, before anyone judges, the flavor hostel is truly bitter for us.

We wanted to start our #RolêUY with teenager stamina: we decided to spend the first three nights on hostels. On our way to Punta del Diablo, we included a layover in Rio Grande do Sul and, hoping that every hostel could be like the Superbude in Germany, we arrived at the Hello Hostel Design in Pelotas.

Falha nossa!

Whenever someone book a private room in a hostel it’s like entering the category VIP/Business Class/Premium customer and people judge you and seem to be cursing your future generations, it's weird. The truth is that the choice has much to do with privacy at lower costs than anything else, but hostel is mandatory for those who want to interact, so ... our fault!

The room had air conditioning, a double bed and… a chair. Actually, it had also one power outlet. Sitting there for a while, with no wi-fi signal, made us meditate on the term ‘Design’ and why people often use it so mistakenly. If that chair was deconstructed, it would turn into two shelves, hangers, bedside table and maybe so, we would have the feeling that someone scratched the ‘Design’ surface. In the shared bathroom, which the staff suggested us not to use when we arrived, as it was "very dirty", there was no mirror. But that makes sense... Withou mirrors we end up not having that inner conversation with our consciousness, that would ask us wisely: What are you doing in here?!

We left to Punta del Diablo having second thoughts, but with the innocence of those who do not want to spoil their vacation.

The Hostel de la Viuda is somehow away from Punta del Diablo’s main street and this is clear from the beginning. The uruguayan couple who runs the place offer transfer to guests and it works fine if you don’t mess up your arrival time. As we ended up coming much earlier than expected and our bus was only going to the terminal, located at the village entrance and not in the main street, we had to use a cab that, luckily for us, other passenger called by phone and the driver promised to come back and pick us up. He charged the fixed (and high) price of 150 pesos for the 2 km ride, but ok.

Estava tudo bem.

We arrived at the hostel and the private room we had booked, was upgraded to one with cable TV. We heard the rules, placed our luggage and took a look at the house, which is large and full of places to hangout: TV room, dining room, billiards, pool, garden with hammocks, cabana, barbecue, some benches around and even a gazebo with a view of the ocean, 1.5km away from the property. Well, It was okay.

We decided to explore the village and it was not before we walk, walk, walk and then walk some more that we realized that to go anywhere from there it would took everytime around 20-30 minutes in the sand, add to that the sun rays and there’s no glamour that resists. But it was still okay.

Festa estranha com gente esquisita | Awkward party with weird guests

With the distance to cover every time to go to town we decided to use the strategy to stay all day out and return only in the late afternoon. For most guests the strategy was different, stay all day in the hostel and not go out for anything. This is why the hostel maintains some grocery items and lots of booz priced only slightly higher than the nearest supermarket.

On the first night, the party was hard and lasted until the wee hours. The living room becomes a street party, and there are (almost) no rules. We were so tired we didn’t mind all the noise.

It is true that if you are a young adult, thirsty to see the world, making your first adventure to a foreign country with friends and ends up going to Hostel de la Viuda, you will feel like the world is your oyster. "Awesome place!”. The guests there are eclectic: various nationalities and therefore, languages. Experienced backpackers, fresh ones, introvert people, people making conversation with everyone, hippies, hipsters and, of course, "regular" Joes. If any of them left the house during the day, we will never know, but they were all there in the early morning and at the same spot in the late afternoon.

You already know about
our trip around the beaches and the village of Punta del Diablo. What you don’t know, and even we still don’t know is: Who moved our queso?!

The hostel offers a simple but consistent breakfast that you can find in regular hotels of Uruguay: cereal, bread, jam, butter and dulce de leche, with juice, milk and coffee to drink. It was funny to see the a group of Brazilian girls having breakfast early in the morning and after spending some time at the pool, coming back to have it one more time for free. But they were not the weirdest ones in the house…

In the best David Copperfield style, the cheese (and ham) we buy for a snack on our last night was stolen in a 15 minutes that took for us to take a bath. And, worse than stealing the whole package was stealing 80% of it, aka 4 of the 5 slices. The hostel has a rule that your food needs to be closed in a bag with name and date to enter the refrigerator. The rule is not really followed, since people are there all day and end up cooking, the fridge is chaotic. As our intention was not to keep it for long, but only for a few minutes before consuming, we did not follow the rule, and, got punished immediately. Could this hostel experience be more cliché?!

A few hours later, we reported to the owner who assured us that this NEVER happens, but that he would check the images from the cameras4, 6, 7 and 9” to find out who did it. We find it curious and it was only then that we noticed that the place is really very well monitored. There’s even a review on Tripadvisor reporting the paranoia of the cameras. It's like taking part of Big Brother, uruguayan edition.

The case was closed as follows: the cheese thieves were found, but as the golden rule of sealing the food with name and date was not followed, we could be equally blamed for the situation and therefore, nothing should be done, period. In short, in the metaphor of an “internet troll”: The cheese thieves are LIFE and the owner of the hostel is GOD teaching us not to be fooled by it.

To meditate about it, let’s go back to the terminal in the back of the trunck, under the scorching hot sun.

Alguém aí aceita um sorvete... Sabor arrependimento?
