5 mouthwatering markets around the world

Mercato Centrale Firenze (Florence - Italy) - Classic European market, the Florence market is a treat for the eyes and the taste. In 2014 the Italian market expanded to one more floor, in a mix of iron and glass, which further enhances its imposing architecture. Helping to revitalize the old center of Tuscany’s capital, the market is meeting point of tourists and locals who cannot left good shopping and good food aside. There we find fresh and selected products, ranging from pasta in various formats to the characteristic local wine, chianti. Mercato Centrale Firenze is open every day from 10 am to midnight; we suggest you take some time to see it.

Mercadão (São Paulo - Brazil) - A tour on the Municipal Market of São Paulo can be considered a small round the world experience. In the cosmopolitan capital we can find people from everywhere so, its market is a reflection of that. You will count more than 290 booths with diverse flavors and, when it comes to visitors statistics, it compares to the world's major markets such as La Boqueria in Barcelona, Spain. Some of them are chasing the iconic bologna sandwich, others for the famous pastel (sort of fried dumpling) filled with codfish. But if I may suggest, I would tell you to go for the fruits. Besides their taste, they are beautiful. And worth as much as they weigh. You’ll be offered ready to eat slices of them by the very friendly staff. Gentleness and colorfulness in the middle of the gray city’s chaos.

Mercado del Puerto (Montevideo - Uruguay) - If you are a meat lover, it’s such an impossible mission to walk around the Ciudad Vieja neighborhood in Montevideo and not get attracted by the barbecue smell coming out of this market. Considered a gastronomic complex, the Mercado del Puerto turned into a touristic spot in the Uruguayan capital. Some may say that it is already outdated to visit, but I don’t. The interior houses several restaurants where visitors can taste the best of Uruguayan cuisine. Provoloneta, chorizo, ojo de bife or even, depending on how hungry you are, a complete parrilla. If you prefer a more authentic experience, sit on the counter and admire the meat being roasted right there on the big and hot grill. To pair with your meal, a Tannat wine or a beer, the choice is yours.

Ver-o-peso (Belém - Brazil) - One of the most popular markets in Brazil, dearest of chefs and foodies, the verupa (nickname for the most intimate) is also my favorite. It boasts a vibrant atmosphere, unlike any other market I have visited around the world. There you will find unusual ingredients, very specific spices, unfamiliar smells, but when combined, turn into such a unique experience. Who tries these exotic flavors hardly regrets. To be visited at any time of day or night, but if you are one of those curious travelers, worth waking up at dawn to witness the “ballet” of the açaí fair, where almost 100 thousand kilos of this typical fruit are sold daily. Prepare yourself to fall in love with the Ver-o-peso, it will get to you by the eyes, the taste and the heart.

Stuttgarter Markthalle (Stuttgart - Germany) - I know, Stuttgart, at first glance, is not a famous touristic town. But things have been changing in recent years and the German city known for being the home of luxury cars brands offers very interesting itineraries for travelers who consider it more than a business destination. A must see spot, no doubt, is its public market, the Stuttgarter Markthalle. With over 100 years of tradition, this market is not so large, but has it all. Spices, fresh fruit and vegetables, hams and cheeses, sausages, pickled vegetables and wine cellars. Remember that some of the booths offer ready to take food and, on the first floor, you will find traditional restaurants for a longer break in the charming market atmosphere.

E você, qual é o seu mercado favorito?
How about you? What's your favorite public market?
